Love Wine, History, or Simply Craving a Getaway? Ilok Will Captivate You. Perched on the banks of the Danube, this charming town is steeped in centuries of stories and offers wines that impress from the very first sip.

Known as the easternmost gem of Croatia, Ilok is home to some of the region’s finest vineyards. But beyond its exceptional wines, this town boasts a fascinating historical legacy. As you stroll through its streets, you’ll feel the echoes of times past—especially the influence of the powerful nobleman Nikola Iločki, whose name still resonates through the town’s ancient walls and wine cellars.

Nikola Iločki – Ruler of Medieval Ilok

In the 15th century, Ilok was ruled by Nikola Iločki (1410–1477), one of the most powerful noblemen of the Hungarian kingdom. He held the titles of Ban of Croatia, Slavonia, and Mačva, and in 1463, he was crowned King of Bosnia. Under his rule, Ilok flourished—one of his major legacies being the construction of the fortress and the Franciscan monastery of St. John of Capistrano. These impressive structures still stand today as symbols of the town’s rich history, and the monastery holds the relics of St. John of Capistrano, an important figure in Catholic Europe.

A Wine Tradition Rooted in the Time of Nikola Iločki

Even during Nikola’s reign, winemaking was central to the region’s economy. Thanks to his vision and development of Ilok as a trading hub, its wines were already being exported across Europe. It’s believed that the vineyards planted along the slopes of Fruška Gora during that time laid the foundation for Ilok’s reputation as a premier wine destination in Croatia.

Today, Ilok is best known for its Traminac, one of Croatia’s most celebrated wines. The excellence and legacy of Ilok’s wines are confirmed by a prestigious honor: Traminac from Ilok’s cellars was served at the British royal court—at the coronations of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, as well as at the weddings of Prince William & Kate and Prince Harry & Meghan. This tradition places Ilok’s wines at the very top of the global wine scene.
